Bridging The Gap Between Synchronous and Asynchronous
Until today, you had to choose between two very different data protection topologies. You could replicate your applications synchronously, spending a sizeable amount of money on costly Fiber Channel communication lines and setting up nearby data centers, due to the known limitation of the Speed of Light. Or, you could choose the Asynchronous way – long distance replication, over lower cost IP lines, to an existing, remote data center, but… with guaranteed data loss upon disaster and a real risk of not being able to fail over at all, due to inconsistency of the applications. Axxana’s Phoenix System Black Box, much like a flight data recorder black box from the aviation industry, is designed to withstand extreme conditions to preserve business data in the event of a disaster.

How EDR Works
The Phoenix Black Box is located near the storage system at the primary data center and records a synchronous data stream from the storage system. At the same time, an asynchronous data replication system moves data to a secondary data center (the remote recovery site). The disaster proof storage device, the Axxana Black Box, has to protect only the Gigabytes of data that would have been lost in a typical asynchronous replication scenario. Data is protected inside the Black Box during the course of the disaster and can be immediately extracted.

Data extraction is achieved in a variety of ways:
- Directly from the Black Box – Locating the system by tracking the homing signal and connecting a laptop with an Axxana software component to retrieve the data.
- Using Cellular Network – Transferring the data from the self-sufficient and well-protected Black Box to the secondary site using highly resilient, cellular broadband technology.
- WAN link – Transmitting the data over the WAN to the distant site.
- Black Box SSD – Physically approaching the box and removing the SSD from the resilient core of the Black Box in order to upload the data at the remote site.
