UK and USA Survey by Axxana Shows Cost Still an Issue for Zero Data Loss DR

Survey Highlights Potential for Affordable Zero Data Loss DR Solutions

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, 9th June 2010 – Axxana, leading manufacturer of the Enterprise Data Recording (EDR) technology-based solutions known as black boxes for the enterprise, today announced the results of a survey conducted in the UK and the USA among a total of 200 IT decision makers. Carried out during May 2010 by market research agency Vanson Bourne, the poll aimed to understand the role that cost has in the adoption of zero data loss disaster recovery (DR) solutions such as Axxana’s Phoenix System® RP, a joint development with EMC’s RecoverPoint for the CLARiiON.

The survey shows that end users still feel that achieving a zero data loss DR strategy is out of their financial reach, with over half of the respondents (57%) across the two countries citing cost as a deployment inhibitor for this technology.

In the UK the financial sector once again proved itself to be the least driven by cost possibly given the high level of data-related legislation this market is subject to; even so, nearly half of the respondents, 44%, find it a main adoption inhibitor when it comes to recovering 100% of their data. At the other end of the scale is the manufacturing industry, with cost being an issue in over two thirds (68%) of the cases. In between these two groups are markets such as retail, distribution and transport (48%).

When looking at the answers from the size of the responding organisations, smaller companies (between 1,000 and 3,000 employees) were less affected by cost (46%) than their larger (over 3,000 staff) counterparts (56%). This could be due to the fact that smaller organisations perceive Zero Data Loss to be completely out of their reach due to many contributing factors such as the need to establish a nearby data centre and the complexity of the communication infrastructure that was required to achieve zero data loss until today.

In the USA, the figure that stands out the most is that related to the financial services market, with 76% of respondents saying that cost is indeed the main inhibitor preventing them from achieving zero data loss DR. In second place is the manufacturing industry with 56% of the respondents finding cost a significant issue. Less affected but still very sensitive to the cost issue are markets such as retail, distribution and transport, with nearly half of the people surveyed (48%) finding cost a main concern.

‘This survey has really shown how today’s end users still feel that eliminating data loss though a disaster recovery strategy is still out of their budget,’ said Eli Efrat, Axxana’s CEO. ‘Although cost is still an important consideration, the results support our strategy and I am confident that a year from now solutions such as our Phoenix System will have a much bigger foothold in the market because they make zero data loss DR an affordable option.’

The Axxana Phoenix System® RP is the first product on the market to offer zero data loss over any geographical distance, for significantly less than the cost of traditional synchronous data mirroring alternatives. The Phoenix System RP passed rigorous testing by the EMC E-Lab, and became part of the prestigious EMC® Select program in January 2010.

Axxana’s Phoenix RP protects at-risk unreplicated and in-transit information between replication cycles. In the event of a WAN failure or a data centre disaster, the Phoenix System continues to protect production data inside the black box until such a time as the decision to fail over is made. The protected information is then conveyed from the black box via cable or wirelessly to the backup data centre where it is reintegrated with RecoverPoint’s  asynchronous copy to create an exact synchronous copy of what was in the primary data centre at the time of the disaster.
